Hình phạt tù chung thân là biện pháp cưỡng chế rất nghiêm khắc, hạn chế nghiêm ngặt tự do của người bị kết án đến hết cuộc đời hoặc cho đến khi họ được ân giảm. Bài viết phân tích quy định của Bộ luật Hình sự Trung Quốc và Luật Hình sự của New South Wales (Úc) về phạm vi, điều kiện áp dụng hình phạt tù chung thân; hình phạt tù chung thân được ân giảm và hình phạt tù chung thân không ân giảm. Từ quy định của Trung Quốc và New South Wales, bài viết đề xuất một số kinh nghiệm để hoàn thiện quy định của Bộ luật Hình sự Việt Nam về hình phạt tù chung thân.
